Rio Olympics: Michael Phelps wins 200-metre individual swim for fourth consecutive time
This was the American swimmer’s 22nd gold medal at the Games.
Michael Phelps won the Olympic gold in the 200-metre individual swim race for the fourth consecutive, and final, time. The 31-year-old came in with a time of 1:54:66, while Japan’s Koseuke Hagino came second with a time of 1:56:61, a full 1.95 seconds after Phelps.
The 200-metre individual medley win brings the American swimmer’s Olympics golds counts to 22. In the 2012 London Olympics, Phelps had swept past Russian gymnast Larisa Latynina to win more golds than any other athlete. Latynina had 18 gold medals to her name. Phelps has won 26 Olympics medals overall. He announced his retirement after the London Games, but made a comeback at Rio.
