Burdwan blast: Kolkata police arrest six Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen members from Bangladesh
The organisation has been accused of carrying out the attacks against secular bloggers in the predominantly Muslim nation.
Six members of Bangladesh-based militant organisation Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen were arrested in Cooch Behar, Bangaon, North 24 Parganas, Basirhat and Assam on Monday, ANI reported. Officials said a special task force attached to the Kolkata state police made the arrests and confiscated explosive materials and fake Indian and Bangladeshi currency. Five of the accused are named in the National Investigation Agency's list of suspects in the 2014 Burdwan blast case.
An initial investigation revealed that the accused were planning attacks in the North East and South India. The task force will ask for police custody of the accused, who will be produced in a Kolkata court today, ANI reported. The news agency named the accused as Anwan Hussain, Mohammad Rubel, Shahudul Islam, Moulana Yusuf, Abul Kalam and Zahirul Islam.
Two people, both allegedly citizens of Bangladesh, were killed while manufacturing improvised explosive devices and another was injured on October 2, 2014, in West Bengal's Burdwan. The National Investigation Agency had framed charges against 30 people in July, 21 months after the blast, ANI reported.
The organisation was reportedly started in 1998 and was banned in Bangladesh in February 2005. Its members have been accused of attacking secular bloggers in Bangladesh.
