Indian football team rises to 137th place on FIFA rankings, its highest in six years
National coach Stephen Constantine said the jump by 11 positions can be attributed to bringing down the average age of the players to 24 from around 32.
The Indian football team has achieved its best FIFA ranking in six years – the squad moved 11 places to the 137th position in the latest list released by the sporting federation on Thursday. India was last ranked 137th in August 2010.
The Indian side won 230 points in September after defeating Puerto Rico – ranked 114 – in an international friendly in Mumbai. "This is just the beginning of the long-term plan we envisage for Indian football. I am certainly not over the moon as I feel my team can achieve much more," national football coach Stephen Constantine said, according to the All India Football Federation.
Constantine had taken over the position for the second time in February 2015, when India was ranked 171st. He believes that the team's improved position can be attributed to bringing down the average age of the players to 24 from around 32.
