The wreckage of a cargo plane that went missing over Indonesia's Papua province was found on Tuesday. Rescuers have recovered the bodies of the four crew members on board, The Global Times reported.

Chief of Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency, Henry Bambang Soelisty, said the debris was found in a slope of Papua's Jayawijaya mountain at a height of 12,000 ft. The aircraft had been carrying 3.1 tonnes of construction material, according to Antara News.

On Sunday, the Caribou plane had been heading to Ilaga, a farming valley in Papua, from Timika city, which is a 30-minute journey. The flight had contacted air traffic control in Ilaga minutes before it was due to land, but it never arrived. It had sent out an emergency signal from a region between two mountain passes, according to officials. Indonesian officials declared it missing on Monday.

The flight was operated by logistics and transport company Alfa Trans but owned by local authorities.

Indonesia has a poor record in aviation safety. Bad weather and the mountainous terrain of Papua also makes the region difficult to fly in.
