The Central Bureau of Investigation will soon start an inquiry into complaints of forgery in the name of the Centre’s Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme. The Ministry of Women and Child Development on Tuesday said that they have received several reports of people offering cash incentives under the scheme. “Keeping in view the public interest and gravity of the matter, it is informed to general public that the case has now been referred to the CBI for investigation into the matter,” said the ministry in a statement.

According to the statement, the illegal activities were reported from Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The ministry has also pursued the matter with the respective state governments.

The ministry advised people not to share personal details and fall prey to such frauds. It also clarified that the scheme has no provision for any cash incentives. “[The] BBBP scheme focuses on challenging mindsets and deep rooted patriarchy in the societal system in order to value girl child, strict enforcement of PC & PNDT Act, advancing education of the girl child,” read the statement.

The scheme was first introduced in October 2014 to address the issue of skewed child sex ratio in India. It was a joint initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Human Resource Development. In August last year, Olympics bronze medalist Sakshi Malik was made the brand ambassador of the initiative in Haryana.
