Tesla and SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk’s new venture plans to merge the human brain with software. Neuralink will create devices to be implanted in the brain, which can help to improve memory and even allow direct interacting with computing devices. The new company aims to help humans keep pace with developments in artificial intelligence, The Verge reported, quoting The Wall Street Journal.

Neuralink is still in the early stages of development. It will work on what Musk calls “neural lace” technology and develop brain electrodes that may allow the upload and download of thoughts, Reuters reported, quoted WSJ. Musk plans to fun Neuralink mostly by himself, people familiar with the matter told the American daily. The new firm has also hired leading academics in the field in recent weeks.

The billionaire entrepreneur has not made an official announcement yet, but the company was registered in California as a “medical research” firm last July. Musk said on Twitter on Monday that he will publish a “long Neuralink piece” in about a week.

The Tesla chief has hinted at launching Neuralink a few times over the past six months. He told a crow in Dubai recently, “Over time I think we will probably see a closer merger of biological intelligence and digital intelligence,” explaining that it was “mostly about the bandwidth, the speed of the connection between your brain and the digital version of yourself, particularly output”, The Verge reported.
