Toll in Amarnath Yatra attack rises to eight
The woman, identified as Lalitaben, was among the 18 pilgrims injured after militants targeted their bus
An injured victim of the Amarnath Yatra attack died on Sunday, taking the toll in the tragedy to eight, ANI reported. The woman, identified as Lalitaben, was among the 18 pilgrims injured after militants targeted their bus in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on July 10.
“She died during the night,” Syed Amin Tabish, medical superintendent of Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences said on Sunday according to the Hindustan Times. All the pilgrims who died were from Gujarat.
On Saturday, the state police detained Peoples Democratic Party MLA Aijaz Ahmad Mir’s driver for questioning in connection with the attack. On Friday, the police had set up a Special Investigation Team to carry out an inquiry into the attack, which police believe was carried out by suspected Lash-e-Taiba militant Abu Ismail.
The attack took place at 8.20 pm when the bus was plying from Baltal to Jammu. The police said the vehicle was neither part of the main yatra convoy nor registered with the shrine board. It drew widespread condemnation across political parties, and a number of citizen protests were organised to decry the violence.
