Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya on Wednesday appointed TR Zeliang the state’s chief minister and invited him to take oath at at 3.00 pm. Acharya has asked Zeliang to prove his majority in the Assembly on or before July 22, ANI reported.

This comes hours after Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu did not turn up for a floor test, forcing Speaker Imtiwapang to adjourn the special session of the Assembly sine die.

The political discord in Nagaland began after Zeliang had claimed that he had the support of 44 of the 59 MLAs in the Assembly. The governor had asked Liezietsu to prove his majority in the state, but the chief minister had rejected the call for a floor test.

In February, MLAs from the Naga People’s Front had forced Zeliang to resign as chief minister after they demanded that he rollback reservation for women in civic polls.
