Sensex ends 124 points higher, Nifty closes crosses 9,900-mark
The gains were led by Wipro which had announced its plan to buyback shares worth Rs 11,00 crore.
After a sluggish trade in the afternoon on Friday, the Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex closed 124 points higher, and the National Stock Exchange Nifty went up 42 points to reclaim its 9,900-mark. While the Sensex ended the day at 32,028.89 points, Nifty closed at 9,915.25 points.
The gains were led mostly by Wipro, which ended more than 6% on both the bourses after it announced its plan to buyback shares worth Rs 11,000 crore. Meanwhile, Reliance Industries also closed about 3.5% higher on the BSE as well as the NSE after it reported its highest quarterly earnings.
Besides Wipro and Reliance Industries, the top gainers on Nifty were Zee Entertainment, Coal India and Kotak Bank. Bharti Airtel (-2.10%), Indiabulls Housing Finance (-2.05%), Power Grid (-1.94) were among the top three losers on the NSE. Wipro, Bajaj Finserv and Adani Power topped on Sensex, while Alembic Pharmaceuticals (-3.21%), Bharti Airtel (-2.14%) and Idea Cellular (-3.32%) were the major losers.
Among the sectoral indices, the IT index gained over 1.64%, followed by consumer durables (-1.27%), TECk (-1.26%) and oil and gas (-1.09%). However, reality index plunged 1.01%, followed by healthcare (-0.47%) and power (-0.29%).
The rupee was trading at 64.3 against a dollar.
