Gunmen shot dead seven people in a Kenyan school on Saturday, Reuters reported. The unidentified attackers targeted the Lokichogio School. Media reports about the identities of the victims differed. Reuters said the victims included six students and a guard, while BBC said at least five students and a guard were killed.

Unconfirmed reports about the assailants raping two students also surfaced. The shooting occurred near the border, Rift Valley regional criminal investigations chief Gideon Kibunja said, the Washington Post reported. Police suspect the gunmen to be from neighboring South Sudan.

Kenyan Police have restricted control over arms smuggling across the borders, Reuters reported. “The attack ... is a painful reminder of the state of insecurity along the border,” Turkana County’s Governor Josphat Nanok said on Twitter.

A suspended school student was also suspected of being the perpetrator, Kibunja said. He was believed to have vowed revenge for the school’s action against him after he was caught fighting with another student. The attackers were looking for the school’s principal and the student involved in the fight, and shot students when they could not find the two.

While the suspended student was arrested on Saturday, a mob managed to gain access to the police station and kill him, the Washington Post reported.
