Strong 80-miles-per-hour winds are likely in coastal areas of England, Wales and Ireland by Monday, when Hurricane Ophelia is expected to reach the British Isles towards its tail end. The Category 3 storm will bring high temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius.

The storm strengthened to Category 3 when it passed through the Azores archipelago in the Atlantic. It is the first hurricane of this category to reach this far east in the ocean.

Ophelia is currently moving through the Atlantic Ocean with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour. When it reaches the United Kingdom and Ireland, it is likely to be reduced to “just an area of low pressure”, the Met Office said.

The department, however, has warned of potential power cuts, damage to buildings, flying debris and the possibility of disruption to transport and mobile phone networks, the BBC reported.
