A fast-track court in Chandigarh on Tuesday held two brothers guilty of raping their 10-year-old niece, IANS reported. The quantum of their sentence will be announced on Thursday.

Both the men have confessed to the crime, the Hindustan Times reported, adding that they could get life imprisonment.

The 10-year-old became pregnant after being sexually assaulted multiple times. She delivered the baby at a hospital in Chandigarh on August 17 after the Supreme Court denied her abortion plea at 32 weeks on July 28. She had approached the Supreme Court after a Chandigarh district court, on July 18, had refused to allow her to abort her six-month-old foetus on the grounds that it would put her health and life at risk.

Both the uncles hail from Nepal. The police had initially arrested one of the men based on the girl’s statement. But in September, forensic reports showed that the DNA of the baby did not match with that of the uncle who was accused of the crime.

The police then arrested the man’s younger brother on September 19 after the girl named him during a counselling session. His DNA sample matched with that of the baby’s.
