The controversy over the Deepika Padukone-starrer Padmavati saw no signs of abating on Wednesday as the Lok Sabha Committee on Petitions sought a report from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification over alleged distortions of history in the period drama, PTI reported.

The parliamentary panel acted on a plea filed by Bharatiya Janata Party MPs CP Joshi and Om Birla. The committee has also asked the film’s director and co-producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali to appear before it, according to The Hindu.

This came even as the government of Gujarat became the fifth state to ban the movie’s release over alleged distortion of history. “We believe in freedom of speech and expression, but any foul play with our great culture is not tolerated,” Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani tweeted.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the story of Rajput queen Padmini, played in the movie by Deepika Padukone, will be taught in schools in the state from 2018, the Hindustan Times reported.

“The young generation is being taught distorted history, and there is a need to teach them about the great personality of Padmavati,” the BJP leader was quoted as saying.
