At least two people were killed and 30 injured after a powerful explosion at a factory in Ningbo city in China’s Zheijiang province on Sunday morning, AFP reported. The cause of the blast is yet to be determined, police said.

The explosion occurred at around 9 am local time (6.30 am Indian Standard Time). It shattered windows and punched holes in the walls of buildings even a kilometre away, state broadcaster CCTV reported. Vehicles were destroyed and buildings collapsed because of the explosion, reports said.

No one lived at the site of the explosion, but it is feared that garbage collectors were present at the time of the blast, People’s Daily reported.

The area had been marked for demolition, police told Reuters. Rescue work is under way.

More details are awaited.
