Central Railway to move its offices out of Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus
It will make way for a railway museum, Piyush Goyal had said last week.
The central division of the Railways will move its headquarters out of the 129-year-old Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai, The Indian Express reported on Sunday. At its place, the government is planning to set up a rail museum, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had said on November 27.
The building, which is a Unesco World Heritage site, houses three offices where around 400 employees work. All of them will now be moved to a new building a few kilometres away.
The sanction to the building is likely to receive approval in next year’s Budget, The Indian Express reported. Till then, Central Railway plans to rent 8,000 square metres of office space within 1 km to 2 km of the terminus. It has already published an expression of interest for the office space in South Mumbai, the Hindustan Times reported.
Although it is not clear when the Central Railway will move out of the building, the Hindustan Times quoted unidentified officials as saying that it will happen before May 2018, when the railway division will celebrate its 130th anniversary.
