Cyclone Ockhi dissipates before making landfall in Gujarat
North coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat may receive only light rain on Wednesday, according to Skymet Weather.
Cyclone Ockhi dissipated completely before reaching the coast of Gujarat, where it was expected to make landfall late on Tuesday night, Skymet Weather reported. The weather monitoring agency, however, said that light rainfall may occur through the day on Wednesday.
“The low-pressure area now lies over north coastal Maharashtra and adjoining south coastal Gujarat and northeast Arabian Sea as of 5.30 am,” the India Meteorological Department said.
Late on Tuesday night, the Meteorological Centre in Ahmedabad had said that the cyclone might not make landfall near the coastal district of Surat, as predicted earlier, after it transformed into a “deep depression”, PTI reported.
Authorities, however, took precautionary measures and evacuated more than 3,200 people from 29 coastal villages in Surat, The Indian Express reported.
