More than 40 flights were diverted from the Delhi airport and 90 more were affected on Sunday because of low visibility. Grounded aircraft were also put on standby, and operations resumed only after 11 am.

At 10 am, the air quality index in Delhi read 401, which falls under the severe category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board. Air of this poor quality is likely to seriously harm those with respiratory diseases.

At the United States Embassy, the Air Quality Index was at a hazardous 442 level at 9 am. People are advised to avoid outdoor exertions in such weather.

With visibility dropping, the Delhi Police issued a set of precautions for motorists, urging them to drive slowly and keep the lights of their vehicles on.
