A 17-year-old Dalit girl committed suicide in Tamil Nadu’s Krishnagiri district after two classmates allegedly tore up her Class 12 examination hall ticket on Monday. The Tamil Nadu Board Higher Secondary exams are under way.

The two boys reportedly harassed her on Monday after she finished writing the mathematics exam. Neighbours found her hanging at her house near Barur village on Tuesday and took her to a hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The police have registered a case against the two boys under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code and detained them for interrogation, The Hindu reported. They have not yet invoked sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prohibition of Atrocities) Act.

The girl’s family, in their complaint, said one of the boys had been harassing her with his “love proposal”. He had also threatened to throw acid on her if she rejected him, the complaint said.

The girl’s parents and relatives protested in front of the government hospital in Kaveripattinam on Tuesday, demanding that the police also book the two boys under the SC/ST Act, according to Mumbai Mirror.
