Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was on Friday appointed the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of organisation and training. He replaces Janardan Dwivedi in the post. Gehlot, who was earlier in charge of the party’s affairs in Gujarat ahead of the Assembly elections in 2017, will now concentrate on the upcoming Assembly elections in Rajasthan, where he is already campaigning.

In other new appointments, Congress MP Rajeev Satav will now oversee the party’s affairs in Gujarat, and former Union minister Jitendra Singh will take on that role in Odisha, replacing BK Hariprasad. Lalji Desai has replaced Mehendra Joshi as the chief organiser of the All India Congress Seva Dal.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi announced these appointments on Friday.

The party on Tuesday appointed Amit Chavda president of the Gujarat Congress. He replaced Bharatsinh Solanki. A senior party member, who did not want to be identified, had then said Chavda’s appointment indicated that Gandhi wants to set up his own team. These changes indicate a generational shift in the leadership, and a few other changes are in the offing, PTI had quoted unidentified party officials as saying.
