A Dalit man was killed in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district on Thursday night allegedly by a group of villagers because he was riding a horse, PTI reported. The police have detained three people for questioning.

The incident took place in Timbi village of the district. In a police complaint, the man’s father said that some men belonging to upper castes had been upset after his son, Pradip Rathod, bought a horse recently. The men had allegedly threatened to kill Rathod if he did not sell off the horse.

The father alleged that some Rajput men killed Rathod with sharp weapons when he was returning home from his farm riding his horse. The police confirmed using closed-circuit television footage that Rathod was on his horse before his body was found. However, they are investigating the case from other angles as well, including rivalry and a love affair.

The family refused to cremate Rathod’s body until the accused are arrested, News18 reported.
