Uttar Pradesh: Dalit man shot dead in Muzaffarnagar, girlfriend’s father arrested
The police arrested Anil Kumar Gupta and seized the weapon reportedly used to kill 18-year-old Vikas Kumar.
An 18-year-old Dalit man was shot dead allegedly by his girlfriend’s father on Monday night in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar, Hindustan Times reported on Wednesday. Anil Kumar Gupta was arrested after the weapon purportedly used to commit the crime was seized from him.
An unidentified police official said Gupta was unhappy about his daughter’s relationship with Vikas Kumar. “On Monday night, the girl called up Vikas as she wanted to meet him,” Muzaffarnagar Superintendent of Police Omveer Singh told The Times of India. “However, when he arrived, her father shot him dead.”
The police said that Vikas Kumar’s father Ram Kumar informed them on Monday night that his son had not returned from the market and that he could not reach him over the phone. Ram Kumar went to Anil Kumar Gupta’s home in Nirala Nagar locality after he heard that a crowd had gathered there, and found his son’s lifeless body in the balcony.
This is the second incident of a person from a Dalit community in Uttar Pradesh being targeted this week. A Dalit girl in Azamgarh was set on fire on Monday after she refused to give her mobile number to her neighbour.
