Kerala Governor P Sathasivam has asked his office to pay a fine of Rs 400 to the state Motor Vehicles Department after his official car was found to have exceeded the speed limit, PTI reported on Thursday.

According to an unidentified official at the Raj Bhavan, Sathasivam’s official car was found exceeding the speed limit of 55 kmph on Kowdiar Road outside the governor’s official residence on April 7. The violation was caught on a speed control detection camera installed along the stretch.

“The governor was not in the car when the violation took place,” the official said. “The incident occurred when the car was taken out for refuelling.” The state Motor Vehicles Department sent a speeding ticket to the Raj Bhavan last week and the governor has reportedly instructed his secretary to make the payment.

“He has set a great example showing no one is above the law of the land,” a senior official of the Motor Vehicles Department told Hindustan Times. “It is an example for those who often flout laws and get away using their positions.”

State Transport Commissioner K Padmakumar lauded Sathasivam’s gesture and said this would persuade commuters to abide by the rules. “Vehicles of judges, police officers and high-ranking officials were also found exceeding the speed limit,” Padmakumar told PTI. “They too have remitted the fine.”
