‘Can religious activity be allowed on government property?’: SC refers matter to larger bench
The court was hearing a plea by an organisation that claimed Delhi’s civic authorities had now allowed it to hold a ‘jagran’ and ‘mata ki chowki’ in a park.
The Supreme Court on Friday asked if religious activities can be allowed on government property in a secular country, and referred the matter to a larger bench, PTI reported.
An organisation called the Jyoti Jagran Mandal had moved the Supreme Court after civic authorities in Delhi denied it permission to hold a “jagran” and “mata ki chowki” at a park in the city. While hearing the petition, a bench of Justices RF Nariman and Indu Malhotra said it was an important matter and was related to a larger question.
The Jyoti Jagran Mandal said that the National Green Tribunal had earlier allowed it to perform religious activities at Chanchal Park in Mayapuri’s Lajwanti area. But the permission was later revoked, which forced it to conduct the event on a road.
