Gangster Munna Bajrangi was shot dead inside a prison in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district on Monday, the Hindustan Times reported. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police OP Singh confirmed that he was shot dead following a brawl with members of a local criminal gang inside the prison.

As per initial information, Bajrangi was shot dead by inmate Sunil Rathi, according to The Times of India. On Sunday, Bajrangi was transferred to Baghpat jail from Jhansi. He was to be produced in court in connection with the 2005 murder case of Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Krishnanand Rai.

Munna Bajrangi alias Prem Prakash was arrested by the Delhi Police in October 2009, for allegedly threatening a businessman to extort Rs 1 crore. Bajrangi was accused of several murder and extortion cases.

Chief Minister Adityanath has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident and the suspension of the jailor. “Such an incident occurring inside jail premises is a serious matter,” he said. “[We] will conduct an in-depth investigation and strict action to be taken against those responsible.”

Additional Director General (Prison) Chandra Prakash suspended four jail officials following the incident. “We are probing how the fire arm was available inside the jail,” Hindustan Times quoted Prakash as saying. “It is a serious lapse by local jail administration.”

On June 29, Bajrangi’s wife addressed a press conference alleging a conspiracy to kill him. “Some police officials would kill my husband during a fake encounter when he comes out of the jail to appear in the court,” she had said, according to The Daily Pioneer.
