The Noida Authority has decided to demolish 114 illegal buildings in the city as part of a crackdown on unauthorised constructions, The Indian Express reported on Saturday.

The decision came about two weeks after two buildings under construction in Greater Noida’s Shahberi village collapsed, killing nine people. The incident prompted a survey of buildings, which found that 1,757 buildings, most of them residential structures, in the city were on “legally shaky ground”.

As many as 114 of these have been constructed on land that was already notified and acquired by the Noida authority, the organisation’s additional Chief Executive Officer Rakesh Kumar Mishra said. “These buildings are outrightly illegal and there will be no compromise regarding their fate. These will be demolished,” Mishra said.

“We have already evacuated four such buildings in Raipur village and filed FIRs against the owners,” he said. “Further, 50 buildings have already been sealed and the owners of 60 other such buildings have already been given notices.”

Fifty-six other buildings have been identified as unsafe and officials have begun action against them, Mishra said, adding that if officials find that they are also hazardous after a thorough inspection, they will be demolished too.

On July 30, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority registered a case against 74 builders for constructing 58 allegedly illegal buildings in Shahberi village.
