Petrol prices increased by 10 paise across all metros on Tuesday, touching Rs 89.54 a litre in Mumbai, ANI reported. A litre of petrol was priced at Rs 82.16 in Delhi, Rs 85.41 in Chennai and Rs 84.01 in Kolkata.

A litre of diesel cost Rs 73.87 in the national Capital and Rs 78.42 in Mumbai – an increase of 9 paise. In Kolkata, diesel was available at Rs 75.72 a litre, while it cost Rs 78.10 in Chennai.

The price of petrol in Delhi has increased around 15.4% from Rs 69.97 on January 1. The rise in diesel prices has been steeper, increasing 22% since January 1, when it cost Rs 59.70.

The prices of petrol and diesel have continued to rise due to the recent depreciation in the rupee’s value and a rise in international oil rates. While crude oil prices have been around the $80 per barrel mark, the rupee declined against the dollar last week, making imports costlier.

On Monday, the rupee closed at 72.51 against the dollar despite measures announced by the government on Friday to curb the currency’s depreciation.

On September 10, Opposition parties staged a nationwide shutdown to protest against the rise in fuel prices and decline in rupee’s value. The Congress called for the bandh, and claimed to have the support of 21 parties.
