West Bengal: One child dead, nine injured in explosion in Kolkata’s Nagerbazar area
The explosion was reported outside a shop in a building that houses the office of a senior civic body official.
One seven-year-old child died and at least nine people were injured in an explosion in Kolkata’s Nagerbazar area on Tuesday, ANI reported. The explosion was reported outside a shop on the ground floor of a building around 9 am, according to PTI.
Barrackpore Commissionerate Deputy Commissioner of Police Ananda Roy said one of the injured was in a critical condition, PTI reported.
“Initially, we thought it was a gas cylinder blast. But it is not so. We are trying to find out the details,” a senior officer of Barrackpore City Police Commissionerate said. “Forensic experts, along with the CID bomb disposal squad, are examining the area.”
The police officer said the building also houses the office of South Dum Dum Municipality chairperson Panchu Roy. “It was a pre-planned blast... They had planned to kill me and other Trinamool Congress workers as it would create panic and help them gain foothold in the area,” Panchu Roy told PTI.
The Trinamool Congress acussed the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh of plotting to kill the municipality official. The BJP refuted the allegations and demanded a National Investigation Agency inquiry into the matter.
“I think this type of blast is similar to the ones carried out by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh elsewhere,” ANI quoted West Bengal minister Purnendu Basu as saying.
Reacting to Basu’s comment, Union minister Kiren Rijiju accused the Trinamool Congress of politicising the matter. BJP leader Mukul Roy also rebuffed Basu’s allegation, reported ANI. “They have the habit of levelling false allegations,” Roy added. “It is their political game.”
