18-year-old athlete commits suicide in hostel room at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru stadium
The Sports Authority of India has ordered a ‘departmental inquiry’ into the suicide of Parvinder Chaudhary.
Parvinder Chaudhary, an 18-year-old athlete who represented India at the international level, committed suicide on Tuesday in his hostel room at Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium premises, reported PTI.
The suicide has prompted the Sports Authority of India to order a “departmental inquiry”. The inquiry will be headed by SAI Secretary Swarn Singh Chabra, with Director General Neelam Kapur saying it will be completed within a week.
Chaudhary, who was from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, was declared dead by the time he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital.
“His roommate and all the trainees and staff at JLN stadium were completely surprised by his act,” the report quoted an unnamed SAI official as saying.
Chaudhary was staying in room 69 of the JLN Stadium hostel since November 2016 and was training for 100- and 200-metre races, PTI reported. In 2017, he was selected for the Asian Youth Championships in Bangkok and won a gold medal in the relay. He also participated at the World Youth Championships last July.
