Several Oscar-winning short films have been recently released on the internet, including acclaimed British director Andrea Arnold’s Wasp. Made in 2004, after Milk (1998) and Dog (2001), Wasp went on to win the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film. Some of the film’s themes were reportedly autobiographical. Arnold grew up in a working-class family in Kent, and her parents were separated when she was very young. Arnold returned to the milieu for her debut feature Red Road (2006) and Fish Tank (2009). Her latest movie American Honey, which follows a teenager’s adventures across the American Midwest, has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival, and is tipped to win either the Palme D’Or, the highest award or Best Director. The journey to international stardom surely began with Wasp, in which a single mother of four goes to great lengths for a date.
American Honey stars Sasha Lane, who has already been hailed as a “breakout star”. Arnold’s fourth movie is her first to be set in the United States of America.
