As a celebration of 70 years of the diplomatic relationship between India and United States of America, the US Embassy in Delhi has released a video of its employees auditioning for roles in Hindi films. The 90-second video, coupled with the hastag #USIndiaDosti, is an effort to strengthen cultural ties between the countries.
Armed with thick accents and intense stares, four American employees awkwardly recreate iconic lines from Hindi films such as Namak Halaal, Om Shanti Om and Sholay (mercifully, the other language industries are spared). An old man wearing a pink shirt and bowtie cracks his whip before he looks into the camera and echoes Gabbar Singh from Sholay with the dialogue, “Kitne aadmi the?” A saree-clad woman rhapsodises about “Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat” from Om Shanti Om. The dialogue “Mere paas maa hai” from Deewar also gets an honorable mention.
