After his 2004 movie on Tamil politician K Kamaraj, director A Balakrishnan is now making a biopic on actor-turned-politician MG Ramachandran. The filmmaker has cast two actors to play the former Tamil Nadu chief minister who had demi-god status, but he hasn’t revealed their names yet.

Producers Ramana Communications announced that the biopic will chronicle MGR’s early days on the stage, his movie career, his contribution to the Dravidian movement and his ties with former Tamil Nadu Chief Ministers CN Annadurai and J Jayalalithaa. This is the centenary year of the actor and politician, who was born on January 17, 1917.

Balakrishnan told the Times of India , “Like Kamaraj, MGR is also a much-admired leader, and I have been meaning to make a film on his life. Interestingly, I had also begun Kamaraj during the centenary year of the leader [2003], and released it the following year.” Production will begin on November 8. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palanisamy is expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.

Ramchandran loosely inspired Mohanlal’s character in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film Iruvar (1997). Prakashraj plays a version of M Karunanidhi and Aishwarya Rai, Jayalalithaa, in Ratnam’s movie.
