Rahi Anil Barve’s horror-thriller Tumbbad, starring Ship of Theseus (2013) actor Sohum Shah, has finally got a release date. Aanand L Rai announced on Wednesday that the film, which had been awaiting release for four years, will be presented by his banner Color Yellow Productions and Eros Now on October 12. Ship of Theseus director Anand Gandhi is the project’s executive producer and creative director.

Rai told Mumbai Mirror that he had seen the film four months ago and wanted to be associated with it right away. “It was a very instinctive decision,” he said.

Set in Pune in the 1920s, Tumbbad reportedly revolves around three generations of a a Hindu upper caste family, and features a non-linear narrative with elements of fantasy. “The film revolves around a person’s deepest fear – indifference,” Barve told The Indian Express in 2014.

“In the monsoon of 2012, we shot in the rain at age-old locations, where no human had ventured for at least a 100 years,” Barve said. “For me, Tumbbad’s locations, the feel of its stuffy air, and the lonely rainy atmosphere that defies the feeling of time’s passage is as central as its characters.”

Barve has previously made the 41-minute short film Manjha, about a street urchin (Gaurav Kamble) who is thirsty for revenge after his sister (Parvati Shankar Nimbalkar) is raped by a policeman. The film was included as a special feature in the Blu-Ray DVD package for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire (2008).
