The new Star Wars movie, out this December, has an update to the fan favorite robot character from the first set of films, R2D2. Where R2 was shaped like a trashcan on wheels, the new droid, called BB-8 looks like a football with a head (which is why the internet has already dubbed it "ball droid.") It looks particularly cool because the 'head' portion manages to stay stable while the ball portion underneath rolls around Tatooine or whatever planet the new set of heroes happens to be in.

What seems like Computer Generated Imagery however actually does exist: And you can own one! Designed and created by Sphero in partnership with Disney, this toy BB-8 rolls, makes funny noises and even react when it runs into something.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is only out in December, but the droid is already available for retail, going at $150. It's controlled by an app, allowing users to give commands to the robot. You can hit “Drive” on your phone to make the droid run and “Message” to record and view infographic messages instantly. According to the company, the droid uses the technology of augmented reality to create, send and view holographic videos.

Sphero’s Chief Creative Officer Rob Maigret told Tech Crunch,“We think of it as more of a droid than an actual toy. It’s not a disposable piece of plastic. This is a piece of technology. Other Sphero products have constant iteration, and this will be the same thing. It will constantly get better.”
