Far away from Gurgaon, from Mumbai, from Bangalore – where everyone thinks they're living in flooded areas – is the reality of the floods in Assam.

The Indian Express reported that "1.27 lakh people have been shifted to relief camps. Standing crops in over 1.37 hectares of land has been damaged." Around 90 per cent of the Kaziranga National Park, where two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhino population is located, is submerged. The death toll has reached 18 in the state, where 18 lakh people have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

The video above shows only the waterlogged roads in the state.

The video below, shot by ANI news, captures rhinos and elephants moving away from the park in a bid to seek higher ground and shelter.

Residents affected by flooding have taken to social media to share their plight. People have been forced to use boats not just for rescue but also for day-to-day travel. Rescue operations by the army and the forest officials are underway.

While this is the worst flood to hit Kaziranga in recent memory, it is still an annual event that is integral to the functioning of the ecosystem.
