Watch: A patient on the operating table played the guitar as surgeons operated on his brain
Taskin Ibna Ali was affected with musician’s dystonia.
While it is not uncommon for doctors to conduct surgery to music, it is quite rare for a patient to be playing the music while being operated on.
But that is just what happened in Bengaluru. A team of doctors of the Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Hospital in the city performed brain circuit surgery on a 31-year-old computer engineer from Dhaka, Bangladesh, Taskin Ibna Ali, who remained awake and played the guitar (video above).
Ali’s performance was actually part of the medical process. His doctors were treating a focal hand dystonia on his left hand. Also known as musician’s dystonia or cramp, the neurological disorder affects the mobility of a person’s fingers and hand due to incorrect information being sent to the muscles in those parts by the brain. The performance helped the doctor understand whether they were on the right track.
