Jammu and Kashmir: Curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar
Strict security arrangements were imposed on Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Independence Day to prevent any untoward incidents. The security for venues for parades and functions such as the Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu and the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar were taken over by security forces. Sharp shooters were deployed on high-rises around the Bakshi Stadium. The authorities also imposed curfew-like restrictions in various parts of Srinagar. The security preparations come more than a week after militants ambushed a Border Security Force convoy in Udhampur.

Punjab: GST delay will hurt state, Congress leader says
Senior Congress leader Captain Amarinder Singh on Friday expressed displeasure at the delay in the introduction and passage of the Goods and Services Tax Bill, saying that this would hurt Punjab. The tax would help Punjab tackle its growing debt worries, he said. The Central government has been unable to pass the Bill through the Rajya Sabha due to disruptions caused by opposition parties.

Andhra Pradesh: Four suspected HuJI members arrested
A Special Task Force in Andhra Pradesh on Friday arrested four suspected Harkat-ul-Jihadi Al-Islami members. Among them was a suspected Pakistani national, Mohammed Nazir. Joint Commissioner of Police T Prabahkar Rao claimed that Nazir had facilitated border crossings for potential recruits. STF officials said that they had recovered cell phones, four Indian passports, one Bangladeshi passport and around 100 Indian Identification cards such as Aadhaar and Voter-ID cards from the men.

Delhi: Raising circle rates in Delhi will curb black money
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday said that raising the circle rates of agricultural land would help the Aam Aadmi Party government to curb black money in land deals in the state. Kejriwal said that the people who were "involved in agriculture land fraud and buying the land through black money" were now "losing their business" due to the state government's notification on the circle rates. Kejriwal's remarks came a day after the state government rejected state Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung’s stay on its order increasing the rates. The government asked state officials to not follow Jung's order on the matter.

Gujarat: Forest dwellers get title rights
The Gujarat government on Friday decided to give legal possession rights to forest dwellers, saying that it would enable them to enjoy the benefits of government schemes meant for regular farmers, as well as obtain bank loans against property. The announcement was made during a function at Santrampur in the Mahisagar district where Chief Minister Anandiben Patel handed over order letters of land ownership to around 800 tribal farmers. While parts of forest areas had earlier been allotted to these tribal farmers under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, the ownership of the land still rested with the government.
