Bihar: Paswan confident of NDA win in upcoming polls
Lok Janshakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan said on Saturday that Arvind Kejriwal's support to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar would not have any effect on the upcoming assembly elections in the state. "AAP is in a trouble of its own, their MLAs are going to jail. Why did Nitish Kumar need Kejriwal? He wants to improve his image because he has joined hands with a corrupt leader like Lalu Yadav. All this is not going to have any effect, we are going to win the elections by two-third majority and form NDA government in Bihar," Paswan said.
Gujarat: High Court stays compulsory voting in civic polls
The Gujarat High Court on Friday stayed the implementation of a law that makes voting compulsory in the civic body elections in the state. While hearing a petition challenging the Gujarat Local Authorities (Amendment) Act, 2009, the court said that the right to vote provides right to refrain from voting and it cannot be turned into "duty of voting". The order came as a major setback to the Gujarat government, which earlier this month had announced a fine of Rs 100 for those who skip voting.
Goa: Special public prosecutor in Louis Berger case quits
The special public prosecutor in the Louis Berger bribery case, GD Kirtani, has resigned citing media criticism. "Certain developments have taken place, without my consent, which have led to unwarranted criticism of my competency in a section of press, as also in social media," Kirtani said in his resignation letter addressed to Under Secretary Neetal Amonkar. He appeared for the police crime branch during the hearing of petitions filed by the accused in the bribery case, and had argued against the anticipatory bail plea of former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and the bail petition of former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao.
West Bengal: Mamata Banerjee seeks to free land for investment
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Saturday a nine-member committee to free land occupied by closed industrial units in the state. The team, comprising a group of ministers, will start by finding ways to free land near Kolkata so that fresh investments can be invited. "The nine-member GoM will look into different aspects of the closed industries in the state," a minister from the team said. "But the primary objective will be to free land of closed industrial units and invite fresh investments on the prime plots."
Punjab: AAP aims to enrol 25 lakh new members
The Aam Aadmi Party has launched a membership drive in Punjab with the aim of enrolling 25 lakh new members by the end of the next month. Party leader Rajiv Chaudhary said the membership drive has been initiated keeping in mind the state assembly elections in 2017. "The membership drive will continue till September 30," he said. "The aim is to enrol 25 lakh new members, with 1 lakh members every day."
