Jammu & Kashmir: Separatist leaders arrested
At least 12 people were injured in protests that erupted in Kashmir on Friday after the Eid prayers as the government snapped all internet services across the state for two days. People in many places sacrificed cattle in defiance of the newly imposed beef ban. Several separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, were detained by the authorities. The police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of protesters.

Gujarat: Asaram Bapu slapped with Rs 17 crore penalty 
Surat district collector served a notice on godman Asaram Bapu asking him to pay a Rs 17-crore penalty for encroaching upon public land for his ashram in Jehangirpura. The notice asks him to pay rent for occupying government land between 1996 to 2010. The 50,000 sq mt plot that the ashram has encroached was acquired by the government in 1976 to construct a protection wall on the banks of the Tapi river.

Bihar: EC seizes arms, liquor, Rs 11 lakh of unaccounted cash
In a drive undertaken under the Election Commission’s direction, the police on Friday seized unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 11.91 lakh, 18,684 litres of liquor, and arms and ammunition from various parts of Bihar before Assembly elections in the state next month. The seizures were made from the districts of Madhubani, Bhojpur, Nawada, Vaishali, Munger and Supaul.

Meghalaya: IB officer killed by insurgents
An Intelligence Bureau officer was killed by insurgents in South Garo hills in Meghalaya this week. The officer was kidnapped along with another person in South Garo hills when militants intercepted a vehicle on Thursday, officials said. His body was found on Friday.

New Delhi: CBI moves SC for Teesta Setalvad’s custody
Central Bureau of Investigation has moved the Supreme Court seeking custodial interrogation of social activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband, charging them with failing to cooperate in the probe into their alleged violations of the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act by misusing foreign funds and posing a threat to communal harmony. The agency has listed several grounds to challenge the August 11 order of the Bombay High Court granting anticipatory bail to Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand.
