It couldn’t have ended any better. The tenth edition of the Indian Premier League got the final it deserved as Mumbai Indians broke the jinx Rising Pune Supergiant enjoyed over them in a thrilling one-run win in Hyderabad on Sunday. At the innings break, few had given Mumbai much of a chance but a combination of incisive bowling and smart captaincy ensured that Rohit Sharma had the final laugh.
Now that the tournament has come to an end, here are a look at some interesting numbers from the seventh week of the IPL:
1. Most finals won in Twenty20 cricket
Mumbai Indians’ three IPL titles are the most by any team in the ten-year history of the tournament. They went past Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders who have won two titles each. Rohit Sharma’s men are now in second place in the list of teams who have won the most finals in Twenty20 cricket. They have won five finals in this format, the second-most by any team. The leaders are Pakistan’s Sialkot Stallions who have won eight finals in Twenty20 cricket.
2. Youngest player to take three wickets in an IPL match
Pune’s Washington Sundar took three wickets from his four overs in the first qualifier against Mumbai Indians. At the age of 17 years and 223 days, this made Sundar the youngest ever player to take three wickets in an IPL match. Not just that, he also became the youngest player in IPL history to be awarded the “Player of the Match” title.
Sundar’s achievement took him past Kamran Khan who was the previous youngest player to take three wickets in an IPL match. He achieved the feat at the age of 18 years and 44 days while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders at Cape Town in 2009.
3. Lowest totals defended in a Twenty20 final
Mumbai Indians defended 129 which is the lowest total ever defended in an IPL final. It was also the third-lowest total defended in any Twenty20 final. The previous lowest total defended in an IPL final was 143, defended by Deccan Chargers against Royal Challengers Bangalore in Johannesburg in 2009.
4. Most wickets by Indian bowlers in an IPL season
Dwayne Bravo holds the record for taking most wickets in an IPL season. He took 32 wickets in 2013 from 18 matches at an average of 15.53 and a strike rate of 11.7. Among Indian bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s haul of 26 wickets this season took him past Harbhajan Singh’s record of taking the most wickets in an IPL season.
5. A true team effort from Mumbai
Mumbai Indians’s third IPL title was the result of a complete team effort as ten different Mumbai players won the Player of the Match award in the tournament. Out of those ten players, only Krunal Pandya and Nitish Rana won the award twice. They broke Delhi Daredevils’ record – the Daredevils had nine different players winning the award in 2009.
