Mohammed Shami’s participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League season has been shrouded in uncertainty after being charged by the Kolkata police for attempt to murder and domestic violence among other offences following his wife’s complaint.

Shami, who was set to play for Delhi Daredevils in the forthcoming IPL season, might end up missing the event if the powers that be within the BCCI feel the charges levelled against him warrant removal.

The BCCI had earlier put Shami’s central contract on hold following the allegations.

Delhi Daredevils CEO Hemant Dua said that the franchise was yet to take a call regarding the cricketer as they were awaiting direction from the BCCI. “Within the franchise we are yet to have a discussion on the matter. If there is a call to be taken, we will deliberate once we receive a formal communication from the board,” Dua said.

“Look Daredevils management can’t take any unilateral decision in this matter. All players who play in the IPL have a tri-partite contract involving the franchise, BCCI and the player. Yes, we are well aware about the sensitive situation and we are having discussions with top BCCI officials. There is a clause about any player bringing disrepute but it is for the lawyers to interpret it,” a senior franchise official told PTI.

There is a possibility that acting president CK Khanna, acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry along with CEO Rahul Johri discuss the Shami issue on the sidelines of the Captain’s Conclave in Mumbai on Monday, March 12.

On Wednesday, Jahan accused Shami of assault and having extramarital affairs. She took to Facebook to post screenshots of text messages allegedly sent by Shami to various women. The post also included photographs of the women and their phone numbers. Jahan alleged that Shami and his family members were “torturing” and had even “attempted to kill her”.

Shami’s brother has also been charged with section 376 (rape). Shami and Jahan got married in April 2014 and have a two-and-a-half-year old daughter.
