IPL 2021, DC vs MI as it happened: Delhi Capitals end of run of defeats against Mumbai Indians
Updates from match No 13 in the Indian Premier League.

Player of the match: Amit Mishra
Top fight in a tight finish 🔥
— Delhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) April 20, 2021
The DC Tigers have beaten the defending champions with 6 wickets and 5 balls to spare 💙#YehHaiNayiDilli #IPL2021 #DCvMI pic.twitter.com/wPf2kSnlNK
End of match: Delhi had not won an IPL match in Chennai since 2010. DC had lost their five matches against MI, and all four matches ended in defeat in 2020. So a few streaks ended tonight.
Amit Mishra, four wickets. Massive wickets too.
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 20, 2021
Shimron Hetmyer, finishes off the run-chase with couple of crisp hits.
The two changes to the XI working well for #DelhiCapitals. #IPL2021
Delhi Capitals win by 6 wickets:
Fair play to Bumrah for bowling those no balls, he's had enough of covering up for the crap that this batting lineup have produced in the Chennai leg.
— Kieran (@BerbaSpinCric) April 20, 2021
Good fight from our bowlers to make it a close contest 👏🏻
— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 20, 2021
#JusticeForHetmyer - Hetmyer went and got it himself
— absy (@absycric) April 20, 2021
19.1, DC 138/4: Delhi Capitals win by 6 wickets! A four for Hetmyer followed by a no ball by Pollard is enough for DC to end their run of defeats against Mumbai.
Pollard, leading MI tonight for most part on the field, to bowl the last over. Hetmyer on strike.
DC 133/4 after 19 overs: A 19th over that did not go the way Jasprit Bumrah would have hoped for. Not often we say that. No boundaries, but two no balls and good running between the wickets means 10 runs for DC. Just 5 needed from the last over.
Over 18.3: Second no ball of the 19th over by Bumrah! Oh dear. And once again free hit doesn’t prove costly. But still, these are extra deliveries in the chase for Delhi. 9 off 9 now.
Over 18.1: Delhi need 15 from 12 balls. Lalit on strike. And Bumrah with a dot ball.... no he has overstepped. Free hit is not costly though, caught in the deep.
It's the 19th over.
— Gaurav Sethi (@BoredCricket) April 20, 2021
Lalit is still there.
Dot ball.
No ball.
Free Hit.
Caught.
Single.
WTF.
DC 123/4 after 18 overs: Delhi need 15 from 12 balls. Lalit on strike.
Over to you Bumrah.
— Clive (@_vanillawallah) April 20, 2021
Drop catch by Boult's standards
— absy (@absycric) April 20, 2021
17.4: First ball four for Hetmyer! Creamed over cover. Next ball, MI think they have the wicket but the umpire says no. Reviews not left, but would not have helped MI. All happening in Chennai.
DC need 22 from 18 balls. Boult on.
Bumrah has now dismissed Pant six times in IPL.
— Umang Pabari (@UPStatsman) April 20, 2021
No other bowler has dismissed Pant more than three times in IPL. #DCvMI
After 17 overs, DC 116/4: Lalit Yadav hit a four early in the over to ease pressure on DC but Bumrah hits back with a big wicket. Are MI doing it again? Surely not? Surely not again?
16.5: WICKET!!! JASPRIT BUMRAH! Who else. The big wicket for Mumbai, as captain Rishabh Pant is caught at fine leg. MI keep clawing back every DC inch forward. 115/4.
Bumrah on. Here we go. Lalit Yadav to go after him?
After 16 overs, DC 107/3: Boult starts off with three dot balls, Pant responds casually with a sweep against one of the premium pacers in the world. Still, MI keeping the pressure on with two Bumrah overs to go.
Commentators remind us: KKR needed 31 from 30 and lost. DC need 37 from 30.

After 15 overs, DC 101/3: The over started with a six and four for Dhawan. In the end, those 10 runs might just be crucial for Delhi? Dhawan out for 45, RChahar finishes with 1/29. DC need 37 from 30 balls.
Over 14.5: WICKET! Well, well. Another late twist in Chennai? Shikhar Dhawan is dismissed, Rahul Chahar strikes. DC 100/3, in walks captain Pant.
One will bring two. Lalit might be the next to go. There’s isn’t a run-chase in Chennai that’s not thrilling 🤩 #DCvMI #IPL2021
— Aakash Chopra (@cricketaakash) April 20, 2021
Timeout. DC need 48 off 36 balls.
The Hardik stop, the tight Jayant over...the boys are giving it their all in the field 💪
— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 20, 2021
Come on, team! Let's keep it tight until it's time for #ThunderBoom 😎#OneFamily #MumbaiIndians #MI #IPL2021 #DCvMI
After 14 overs, DC 90/2: Jayant Yadav finishes his spell with a tidy over, just four runs. Scoreboard pressure creeping up on Delhi as Dhawan tries a reverse sweep that didn’t pay off. That’s not his shot. 1/25 for Jayant.
DC need 62 from 54 balls.
After 13 overs, DC 86/2: Just three runs from Chahar over, as he got one to spin and bounce on Dhawan! That was a Test-esque. MI will like the look of that. Not over, this match.
Vinayakk Mohanarangan: Quite enjoying this battle. Mumbai really good in the death with Bumrah and, this season, Boult too. Delhi seemingly holding Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer back for some firepower if needed at the end. The Chennai pitch is making teams think and think.
After 12 overs, DC 83/2: A four early on for Dhawan in Bumrah’s over and DC get the runs they would have wanted from that over. The ball slips out of Bumrah’s hand, in an indication for the dew.
Dew could be the determining factor tonight. But irrespective of that #DelhiCapitals are playing this very sensibly.
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 20, 2021
Bumrah comes on. Crucial over.
After 11 overs, DC 76/2: Dhawan hits a four off Chahar’s first ball of the over. Steady batting from Dhawan.
Of top three batsmen to have faced 100+ balls since the start of last season's IPL, only Shreyas Iyer (45%) and Ajinkya Rahane (34%) have recorded a lower attacking shot percentage than Steve Smith (48%). #IPL2021
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 20, 2021
After 10 overs, DC 68/2: This is where things get interesting. MI have a new batter to bowl at (Lalit Yadav, interestingly). Run-scoring gets tough from here.
The score of Chennai. Virat Kohli twice and Steve Smith once. #IPL2021 https://t.co/MLsnHuJKh1
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 20, 2021
Over 9.2: WICKET! Kieron Pollard, acting captain for MI at the moment, comes into bowl and gets the wicket of Steve Smith. Out LBW, not reviewed. 33 off 29 balls for the Aussie batsman, which is the third such in the IPL this year in Chennai!
Kieron Pollard with a warning at the non-striker's end for Shikhar Dhawan. Hmm. #IPL2021
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 20, 2021
Kieron Pollard comes on (brings himself on?). MI hoping to take this deep too? Bumrah still has three left.
A different approach from Delhi but it's working till now !!! #IPL2021 #MIvDC

— Ben Jones (@benjonescricket) April 20, 2021
Need 74 from 66 balls. Delhi Capitals on track in the run-chase, crucially, with wickets in hand.
After 9 overs, DC 64/1: Good over for DC. A late cut and a scoop behind the wicket for Steve Smith for a couple of boundaries. Timeout taken and DC would be fairly pleased with this.
Kieron Pollard captain at the moment. Rohit Sharma is off the field.
After 8 overs, DC 52/1: Jayant Yadav comes back, DC keep their strategy similar. No risks at the moment.
Shikhar Dhawan scores at 7.23rpo against Jayant Yadav in the IPL. Harbhajan Singh and Glenn Maxwell are the only off-spinners he's faced 30+ balls from and scored at a higher rate against. #IPL2021
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 20, 2021
Different approach so far from @DelhiCapitals. Not playing the big shots and backing themselves to bat through on this surface
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) April 20, 2021
After 7 overs, DC 47/1: A risk-free 8-run over for Delhi as the required rate reaches exactly 7.
Al look at Rahul Chahar's main weapon.pic.twitter.com/IY0hK0epjY
— Flighted Leggie 🏏 (@flighted_leggie) April 20, 2021
End of powerplay: DC 39/1 (6 overs): Krunal with a tidy over.
Chasing has not been easy in Chennai, so both teams will have reasons to think they are still in this one. From DC’s perspective, losing just one wicket is good but they might have expected a few more runs with the harder new ball. For MI, they will quietly pleased. Dhawan’s wicket here could be game-changing.
Does MI have a case to drop Trent Boult? He is supposed to be the man picking the wickets in the PP, something which isn't happening due to Chepauk and might not happen in Delhi as well. Might need to reconsider his selection.
— Clive (@_vanillawallah) April 20, 2021
After 5 overs, DC 34/1: Bumrah comes on, and a wicket-less Bumrah over is a win for DC. A double off a wide helped DC’s case.
After 4 overs, DC 28/1: Another boundary for Smith. Three dot balls from Jayant, followed by a four. That should be alright for DC, if Smith can keep the scoreboard ticking.
After 3 overs, DC 22/1: Smith has a big night ahead of him. This is the kind of chase that DC would love him to anchor and see through.
His first four in the DC blues 💙
— Delhi Capitals (@DelhiCapitals) April 20, 2021
Many more to come, Smithy 🔥#YehHaiNayiDilli #IPL2021 #DCvMI pic.twitter.com/hRWqkWJCfP
Jayant Yadav is literally a nightmare for Delhi Capitals - #MI will keep on buying him and only to play against DC.
— Johns. (@CricCrazyJohns) April 20, 2021
Over 1.3: WICKET! Four and out. Jayant Yadav, brought in again to face Delhi Capitals, gets the wicket in his first over. But it’s the right-hander Prithvi Shaw. Caught and bowled. MI have the early strike they wanted.
On a replay, everything will look not-out. Expect a lot more of this ambiguity

After 1 overs, DC 5/0: DRAMA! Mumbai think they have seen the back of Shikhar Dhawan but not so. A screamer from Hardik but the third umpire, after seeing replays, it is not out. No soft signals, remember. So Hardik’s celebration did not matter. Right decision, surely?
Hardik has taken a screamer 🤯

MI innings:
First 8 overs: 70/2
Next 12 overs: 67/7
End of innings: Mumbai 137/9 (20)
A superb bowling effort by Delhi Capitals. When Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar were batting, a big score seemed possible. But Amit Mishra and Co do well to restrict the champions.
WICKET! Avesh Khan gets the wicket of Rahul Chahar in the final over and that means, despite his plea, Trent Boult will have to bat again.

— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 20, 2021
WICKET! Jayant Yadav played a decent hand, Kagiso Rabada takes his first wicket of the night. MI in danger of getting all out again. MI: 130/8 after 19 overs.
What a night for Amit Mishra.
After 1 over, 10/0
After 2 overs, 17/2
After 3 overs, 19/3
After 4 overs, 24/4
Wickets of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard and Ishan Kishan
MI 123/7 after 17.3 overs: WICKET! Amit Mishra has his fourth. Add Ishan Kishan to the list of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. A full delivery, Ishan tries to dig it through offside but the ball bounces on top of the stumps. What a night for the legspinner!
MI 120/6 after 17 overs: Rabada comes back and Ishan Kishan helps himself to a four down the leg side. Will Amit Mishra not bowl out? Remains to be seen.
MI 114/6 after 16 overs: Jayant Yadav and Ishan Kishan have rebuilt for MI after a series of wickets. A six in that Ashwin over for Ishan helps him break the shackles. Ashwin has actually bowled better than figures of 4-0-30-0 suggest. How much can MI finish with?
Flat SIX from Ishan 🤩
— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 20, 2021
After 15 overs, MI 101/6: Just 5 singles in Lalit Yadav’s over as he finishes with 4-0-17-1
National news: PM Narendra Modi is addressing the nation at the moment regarding the Covid-19 situation. Follow updates here.
After 14 overs, MI 96/6: Jayant Yadav glances one for four as Stoinis comes back into the attack. Almost a catch to Ashwin off the last ball.
Ishan Kishan is due a score this season, plenty riding on him if MI are to reach a defendable score.
— Maara (@QuickWristSpin) April 20, 2021
Amit Mishra: First 8 balls today, conceded 16 runs. Since then, wickets of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard. Next 10 balls, 3 wickets and 3 runs.
After 13 overs, MI 89/6: Lalit Yadav gets through another over quietly. He has done a good job from one end, Pant has used him smartly. Time for a timeout.
Over 11.5: WICKET! Amit Mishra on fire for Delhi Capitals. Another huge wicket, this time Kieron Pollard is out LBW. Done by the wrong ‘un. Pollard reviews but umpire’s call stands. Just clipping the top of stumps. MI 84/6.
Pollard must be pissed that he has to restrain himself against those balls 🤣
— Static_357 (@Static_a357) April 20, 2021
Over 10.4: WICKET! The procession continues in Chennai. Lalit Yadav gets one with his part-time finger spin, as Krunal Pandya chops on. Around the wicket, drifting in with the arm. Rohit Sharma looking on as a nervous captain from the dressing room. MI 81/5.
Mishra Ji ! Old is gold Using his experience and giving breakthroughs of two destructive t20 batters.#DCvsMI #IPL2021 @MishiAmit
— Reema Malhotra (@ReemaMalhotra8) April 20, 2021
After 10 overs, MI 78/4: Ashwin comes on, no surprise with two LHBs in. Krunal and Ishan play it out safely with MI in trouble. Just one run.

7 Sandeep Sharma / Virat Kohli
7 Amit Mishra / Rohit Sharma #DCvMI #MIvDC
Over 8.6 WICKET! Two in the over for Amit Mishra. Big moment in the match potentially. Hardik Pandya is out for a first-ball duck, also caught at long on. Steve Smith in the action both times, he doesn’t drop many. MI 77/4 (9)
Over 8.3: WICKET! Rohit Sharma’s entertaining innings is over and it is Amit Mishra who gets the big breakthrough. The MI captain was looking in great touch, but gets the lofted shot down the ground all wrong, caught at long on. Rohit had hit a couple of boundaries in that over, but the wicket is massive. Turned late, Rohit was trying to go over off-side but it went the wrong direction. 76/3 now. Lalit Yadav had bowled a 3-run over previously. DC coming back nicely.
Over 6.6: WICKET! Avesh Khan strikes! Suryakumar Yadav tries to run one more down the third man region but the edge is too fine and Pant takes the catch. Out for a 15-ball 24. 67/2 after 7 overs. Big celebration from Avesh after he was hit for a four and a six earlier in the over. Rohit’s six was over fine leg. He feasts on those short deliveries.
Rohit has sent the ball to the Marina beach.

SKY, what a shot. pic.twitter.com/jyacV3P0gd
— Vinayakk (@vinayakkm) April 20, 2021
End of powerplay: MI 55/1 after 6 overs Suryakumar Yadav shows again what good touch he is in at the moment, with two boundaries in Amit Mishra’s first over as MI finish the powerplay strongly. The first of those fours was a ridiculous inside out shot by SKY!
95 metres! 💙
— Mumbai Indians (@mipaltan) April 20, 2021
Paltan, how was THAT six from RO? 🔥
After 5 overs, MI 45/1: BIG OVER AGAIN! Rabada is welcomed to Chennai with a 14-run over. SKY starts with a dab to third. And then Rohit slams on down the ground for 95 meters as he sends the MI camp ducking for cover in the stands.
That is some casual six. To hit it over covers against Ashwin with ridiculous ease is no easy thing. But then not all are Rohit Sharma
— Venkata Krishna B (@venkatatweets) April 20, 2021
After 4 overs, MI 31/1: BIG OVER! It’s a chess battle between Ashwin and Rohit. The offspinner stops in his run-up once to see what Rohit is up to and then the MI captain plays a sweep followed by a inside-out lofted six! Both one-handed. Pant would have loved it if it didn’t come against his side.
Mumbai Indians' approach in the Powerplay overs this season has to prioritise wicket retention over fast starts. They average 52 runs per wicket in this phase, by far the best in the competition, but are scoring at 7.37rpo, the fifth fastest in the tournament. #IPL2021
— The CricViz Analyst (@cricvizanalyst) April 20, 2021
After 3 overs MI 16/1: No getting off the mark with a four for SKY today. Tidy over by Stoinis, MI under early pressure.
Over 2.1: WICKET! Delhi’s decision to start with Stoinis has paid off. In his second over, he gets de Kock to edge one to Pant. Length ball, de Kock trying to punch through offside and the outside edge is a healthy one. Lack of pace on the pitch undoes another batsman in Chennai. DC strike early.

Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma share quite the bond. 😁#DelhiCapitals #MumbaiIndians pic.twitter.com/Bv4aTKpO6G
After 2 overs, MI 9/0: Top over by Ashwin! Brings out his undercutters, carrom balls, and drifters. One massive LBW appeal against Rohit, but no review taken (much to Ashwin’s dislike it seemed like) but Pant was right. Missing.
After 1 over, MI 6/0: Delhi Capitals are without Woakes today, playing Mishra. And Stoinis starts with a tidy over, which saw a huge appeal for LBW against Rohit. The ball cut back in sharply. No review though, perhaps height. Hetmyer made to work hard in the outfield to prevent a couple of boundaries.
First game in Chennai this season for Delhi Capitals against defending champions Mumbai Indians, who have been here since the start. Rohit Sharma on strike, Marcus Stoinis to start off. Here we go!
Rohit Sharma, who has had a decent couple of outings but yet to get going truly this season, is opening with QdK. DC, interestingly, start with Stoinis. Cutters galore?

07.26 pm: First match in Chennai for DC, while Mumbai have been here for a while. That gives MI a definite edge, but DC have the quality and they have, on paper, gone with a strong XI to make the most of Chennai conditions. We have seen in the last few matches one quickfire innings has been game-changing and it can come from Hetmyer. For now, all eyes on DC bowlers. Ashwin will be happy to be home.
Some pre-match reading for you, about Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul... and the art of taking risks.

06.50 pm: Hello and welcome to the live blog of match No 13 in the Indian Premier League. It is the rematch of IPL 2020 final. It is Delhi Capitals taking on Mumbai Indians. It is Rishabh Pant and Co vs Rohit Sharma and Co. It is potentially a blockbuster, if these two teams get going close to their best.
The teams four times in IPL 2020 and on each occasion, MI came out on top.
Today, as they clash in Chennai, DC will hope to get their act together against a MI batting line-up that hasn’t quite fired yet. While Mumbai have the advantage of having been in Chennai for a while, Delhi will have to quickly adjust.
