A huge fire broke out in Crawford Market in south Mumbai on Sunday morning, gutting more than 50 shops. The fire brigade were called in after locals noticed the flames in the cramped market. Around 10 fire engines and eight water tankers arrived at the spot. No injuries have been reported.

PS Rahangdale, chief fire officer, said it took them about an hour to douse the fire, and they are investigating what caused the blaze. Over the years, several fires have broken out in the market, where hundreds of vendors sell everything from groceries to perfumes. The area has negligible fire safety arrangements.
