Centre seeks report on mob violence
The Union Home Ministry has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to present a report on the lynching of a man in Dadri in Greater Noida earlier Monday after rumours that he had consumed beef. The Centre has also sent an advisory to the state to keep a check on incidents of communal violence, reported the Hindu. The Uttar Pradesh police have detained the priest of a neighbourhood temple who is alleged to have made an announcement over a loudspeaker in the midst of a kirtan decrying the “killing of a cow”. The priest, however, claimed that it was not he who made the announcement, but that two or three men who barged into the temple and “forcibly snatched the microphone” from him.
Mamata blasts Modi government for CBI raids
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday criticised the Narendra Modi government for the raids conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation on the residence of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh. Addressing a chief ministers' conclave organised by the Delhi Government, Banerjee questioned what would happen if a chief minister orders raids at the house of Prime Minister and said that constitutional positions “are at stake”. Banerjee accused the Centre of running “parallel governments” in states through governors and “turning everything into communal”.
Revealing Memon expenses affect national unity: Maharashtra
The Maharashtra government has refused to provide information sought under the Right to Information Act about the expenses incurred on Yakub Memon, the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict who was hanged in Nagpur jail in July. In a reply given to RTI activist Anil Galgali, the home department said that providing this information would affect the sovereignty, unity and security of the country. Galgali had sought information from the state government on all types of expenses incurred on Memon, from his arrest up to his hanging.
Man shoots himself in Delhi Metro station
A 22-year-old man allegedly shot himself with a country-made gun in the busy Rajiv Chowk Metro station in Delhi on Thursday evening. The man, who is an Uttar Pradesh native, was rushed to RML Hospital, where he was being operated upon, according to latest reports. The incident has raised serious security concerns in the Delhi Metro. The Delhi police and the Central Industrial Security Force, which oversees security on the Delhi Metro network, are investigating how the man managed to enter the Metro station with a gun.
Delhi ACB chief orders probe into ad contacts
The chief of Delhi’s Anti-Corruption Branch, MK Meena, has ordered an inquiry and served a notice to Delhi government based on a complaint alleging irregularities in how advertising contracts were awarded. According to a report, Meena said that a notice has been served to the officers concerned in the Directorate of Information and Publicity asking them to provide documents crucial to the investigation. The Aam Aadmi Party-led government has denied the allegations.
