Indian Super League: Chennai breeze past Delhi 4-0 at home
A brace from Lalpekhlua was the highlight of a fine night for the hosts.
Chennaiyin FC ripped apart the Delhi Dynamos 4-0 at at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai in front of a delighted audience of 25,531. With this win, Chennai kept themselves in the hunt for a place in the playoffs.
Fan favourite Mendoza scored in the 17th minute as a loose clearance from Delhi keeper Toni Doblas fell straight to his feet. Four minutes later, Bruno Pellisari doubled the lead, making no mistake from the rebound after a fierce shot by Jeje Lalpekhlua was saved.
Lalpekhlua would not be denied though, and he ensured that he made no mistake from a perfect cross by Mendoza, leaving Chennai going into the half-time break with a 3-0 lead. Worse was to come for the Dynamos, Lalpekhlua got his second of the night, nine minutes into the second half, taking advantage of confusion in the Delhi box to make it 4-0.
For the high-flying Delhi Dynamos, this was a result that rudely brought them back to earth. The table looks wide open with almost every team now in with a chance to make the playoffs.
