India successfully chased the highest Twenty20 International total against Australia on Sunday at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Asked to score 198 runs to win, India won in a photo-finish on the final delivery of their allotted 20 overs after losing three wickets, thereby taking the three-match series 3-0. India also climbed to the top of the world T20 rankings, while Australia slid to eighth spot.

After Australia's stand-in captain Shane Watson scored a magnificent century to take Australia to 197-5, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both scored half-centuries to take India to within 50 runs of their target with just over five overs to go. However, in an infuriating period of four overs for the tourists, reminiscent of the 2014 World T20 final against Sri Lanka, Yuvraj Singh struggled to connect bat with ball.

With 17 runs needed off the final over, it seemed like the Australians would be grabbing a consolation win. However, Singh struck a four and a six off the following two deliveries, before letting the in-form Suresh Raina (49 not out) get the winning runs. After losing the one-day series 1-4, the 3-0 clean sweep in the T20Is would have come as a welcome tonic for MS Dhoni's men.

Earlier, Watson hammered 124 off just 71 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes, after he chose to bat on a dry pitch full of runs. He became the first batsman ever to score a hundred against India in T20Is, after reaching three figures in just 60 balls. The 34-year-old opened the batting, before going on to carry his bat and score almost two-third of his team's runs. His 124 not out was also the second-highest individual score in T20 internationals, after compatriot Aaron Finch's 156.

Watson shared a 93-run partnership with No 5 Travis Head, whose contribution was only 26. Not known to play very well against the turning ball, Watson thrashed India's spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for 59 runs off just 28 deliveries. Unfortunately for Watson and Australia, his efforts were to go in vain.
