Japanese automotive giant Toyota on Thursday recalled 28.7 lakh of its SUVs worldwide, saying that the rear seat-belts in the cars could be damaged in a crash, reported Reuters. The automaker said the defect has been detected in its RAV4 SUV model produced between July 2005 and August 2014, and its Vanguard SUV model produced between October 2005 and January 2016.

The move comes after two incidents were reported where the rear seat-belt in the RAV4 was damaged by a part of the metal seat-cushion frame during a crash, leaving the passenger unprotected. The automaker said it plans to add resin to the metal frame in recalled cars as a precautionary measure to avoid such incidents in the future. The recall included 13 lakh vehicles in North America, around 6.25 lakh in Europe, 4.34 lakh in China, 1.77 lakh in Japan and 3.07 lakh in other regions.
