Deepa Malik wins silver in shot put, first Indian woman to bring home a Paralympics medal
The para-athlete shot a distance of 4.61 m to achieve the mark.
Deepa Malik on Monday became the first Indian woman to win a Paralympic medals. She secured a silver for the country at the women's shot put F53 event at the Games in Rio de Janeiro. She shot a distance of 4.61 metre to achieve the mark.
The 45-year-old Malik is the oldest member of the Indian contingent and is the current Asian record holder in the javelin throw. She also won silver in the shot put and discus throw events at the 2011 World Championships and received the Arjuna award in 2012.
This is India's third medal in the Paralympics after Mariyappan Thangavelu's gold and Varun Singh Bhati's bronze wins in the men's high jump T42 event on Friday.
