Uri: Kashmiri student expelled from Aligarh Muslim University for 'objectionable' Facebook post
Mudassar Yusuf’s online message ‘smacked of anti-national sentiments’, Vice Chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah said.
Aligarh Muslim University on Monday expelled a Kashmiri student for an “objectionable” Facebook post on the attack in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir, that killed18 Indian Army soldiers on Sunday, PTI reported. A spokesperson for the University said Vice-Chancellor Lieutenant-General Zameer Uddin Shah ordered Mudassar Yusuf’s expulsion after personally investigating the matter. The post itself appears to have been taken off Facebook.
“Lt. General Shah said that there is no scope whatsoever at AMU for tolerating any incident which smacks of anti-national sentiments,” the spokesperson said. Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha MP from Aligarh Satish Kumar Gautam had also written to Shah demanding action against Yusuf, who apologised to the vice chancellor for the post on Sunday. The student, who was pursuing a masters degree in chemistry, said he put up the post after being “carried away by sentiments”, according to the report.
Four militants attacked an Uri Army base near the Line of Control on Sunday, and were later gunned down by Indian forces. Initial investigations indicated the involvement of the Jaish-e-Mohammed militant group, which India claims was also behind the Pathankot attack in January. The attack comes even as curfew and other restrictions remain in place in parts of Jammu and Kashmir because of violence in the state following the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant Burhan Wani on July 8.
