Four attackers killed 10 people and injured 27 others at a Crusader castle in Jordan’s Karak on Sunday, before security personnel gunned them down, BBC reported. The deceased victims include seven police personnel, two Jordanians and a Canadian tourist. Officials said they are yet to ascertain if the accused belong to a known militant group.

The site of the shooting is a popular tourist destination. Officials said police personnel were responding to a fire reported at a Karak residence, when “unknown gunmen who were inside the house opened fire on the patrol, and then fled by car,” the statement said.

The accused reportedly opened fire on another police patrol car a little while later before heading towards the castle. The statement, published by state news agency Petra, said gunmen inside the Crusader castle opened fire on the Karak police station, “wounding several policemen and passers-by” who were taken to hospital, AFP reported.

The country has been a target of extremist groups in the past. Jordan is an ally of the United States-led coalition against the Islamic State group, which has threatened to “break down” Jordan’s borders.
