Cricket Association of Bengal President Sourav Ganguly on Monday said he had received a death threat from an anonymous person. In a letter, the person asked him to stay away from a district felicitation programme on January 19. The function is being organised by Vidyasagar University in Medinipur district of West Bengal, reported PTI. “Yes, I have received the letter on January 7 and I have informed this to the police and the organisers,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly said the letter warned him of grave consequences if he visited the district. However, the former Indian cricket captain has yet to make up his mind on whether to attend the event or not. “Let’s see, nothing has been decided yet but it will be a live show programme and you all will come to know if I go there,” he added.

Officials at Lalbazar police station told The Times of India that they were reviewing his security. “The letter seems innocuous and might even be a prank. But the special branch has been activated and they will file a report in this regard,” an officer told the daily.

Ganguly has received similar threats in the past as well. In 2008, he and his family had received two threat letters – one was reportedly from the Indian Mujahideen militant group while the other was from a Maoists organisation.
